Frequently asked questions
Is New York City LGBTQ+ friendly?
Yes, New York City is very LGBTQ+ friendly: it has one of the largest and most visible LGBTQ+ communities in the world, and city and state law prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in employment, housing and public places. See Essentials for who to call if something goes wrong.
What is the main gay area in New York?
New York has no single main gay area. Hell's Kitchen has the densest run of gay bars, the West Village is the historic heart around the Stonewall Inn, and Chelsea, the East Village and Harlem each have their own scene. In Brooklyn look to Bushwick, Williamsburg and Park Slope, and in Queens to Jackson Heights and Astoria. Our neighborhood guide compares them.
When is NYC Pride?
The NYC Pride March is held on the last Sunday in June, which is June 27 in 2027. Official 2027 details had not been published when we last checked. Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Harlem and Staten Island all hold their own Prides between late May and July. Details are in the NYC Pride guide.
How do I find out what LGBTQ+ events are on this week?
Our events page lists verified, dated events for the current and coming month and points to the listings sources that are still being updated. Venue Instagram accounts are the most reliable place for same-week lineups.
How often is OUT NYC updated?
Every page is re-checked monthly: venues are confirmed open, dates are refreshed and broken links are fixed. Each page shows the month it was last verified, and What's New logs what changed. If you spot something out of date, tell us.
